The film covers the story behind Hunter S. Thompson's groundbreaking article, The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved, for a 1970 edition Scanlan's Monthly.  The piece is widely recognized as the spark that ignited "Gonzo Journalism," a style widely used today in which stories are covered without any claims of objectivity, often from a first-person point of view.

The short is illustrated in the signature style of Ralph Steadman, who provided the original artwork for The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved.  An interview with Steadman is featured in the film.
